A Darien officer was patrolling the area of Post Road and Clubhouse Circle on Thursday, Feb. 14 around 11 a.m. The officer observed a gray sedan traveling eastbound on Post Road that had a broken rear brake lamp and was missing a front license plate.
The officer conducted a traffic stop and noticed that a strong smell of marijuana was coming from the vehicle. The driver, 28-year-old Cavel Banton, admitted to having a small amount in his vehicle and showed officers.
During routine checks of the driver, police discovered two outstanding bench warrants, both for incidents related to driving with a suspended license.
The first was issued after Banton allegedly failed to appear in court for an arrest made in May of 2017 by Connecticut State Police. The second warrant was issued when Banton failed to appear in court for an arrest made in July of 2015 by Greenwich Police.
Based on this information, Darien Police arrested Banton and processed him for the warrants. He was released on a $6,000 court set bond and is scheduled to appear in New Britain court on Monday, Feb. 25 and Stamford court on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
Darien Police also issued Banton an infraction for possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana as a result of the original traffic stop.
